Message from the Co-Chairs

Stefan Gröschl, Simon Nyeck and Junko Takagi

Today, most regions and countries in the world are experiencing increasingly diverse populations, labor, and consumer markets. While the causes may vary, the challenges businesses are facing due to a heightened awareness of this diversity are often similar.

Internally, organizations have to manage increasingly heterogeneous workforces, accommodate and integrate employees with different value and belief systems, and combat racial and other forms of discrimination. Externally, organizations have to manage demands from governmental and lobbying sources for the implementation of anti-discrimination policies and laws, and the review and revision of organizational cultural characteristics, HR policies and practices, and ethical standards, and to respond to the increasingly diverse consumer needs for products and services.

In contrast to current commentators and actors who have treated and discussed diversity and diversity management mostly as a trend, the creation of this ESSEC Chair with Air France, Deloitte and L’Oreal reflects our view that the varying conceptual frameworks of diversity and different paradigms of diversity management will continue to be a key discourse within and across different business and management disciplines.

This Chair aims at exploring the meaning and conceptualization of diversity within organizational and managerial contexts. We will examine interrelations between organizational and managerial policies, processes, practices and their implications, and organizational diversity and performance. Other Chair objectives include the exploration of interrelations between diversity and the stakeholders of a firm, and the examination of institutional and legal contexts, their evolution and impact on diversity and performance in firms.
